Central London Fencing Club

In early June this year I got the opportunity to photograph the Central London Fencing Club’s (CLFC) summer tournament. Having never watched fencing before i was staggered by how fast and action packed the sudden moments of aggression are.

Watching as the two combatants probe for an opening is quite serene until suddenly the two have moved together and made their moves in the blink of an eye. Exciting stuff, but nightmarish for a photographer – especially in a dimly lit gym. Fortunately fellow photographer and a combatant on the day, Kevin Leitch was able to give me a few tips on what to watch for and how to compensate for the awful 60hz lighting which made every frame a different colour and caused banding at anything over 1/50s.

If you would like to see more or you are interested in taking part in Fencing, please check out CLFC’s great website, which has plenty of galleries and all the information you need to get involved in the sport of fencing.
